State Education Department Recognizes 75 Employers of Individuals With Disabilities
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)
In recognition of (NDEAM) throughout October, the State Education Department is honoring 75 businesses across the state that do an outstanding job of employing individuals with disabilities, Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced today. This year’s theme, “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation,” recognizes the crucial role people with disabilities play in a diverse and inclusive workforce. Virtual events will be held throughout the month to recognize the employers.
Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. said, “The Board of Regents and I are committed to ensuring every New Yorker has the opportunity to succeed and contribute to their community. We are thrilled to honor businesses that share these values. This month, we celebrate individuals with disabilities, the diversity they bring to the workforce, and the businesses that hire them. These businesses enrich their workplaces and communities by hiring employees with diverse abilities and are truly deserving of the recognition bestowed upon them.”
Commissioner Rosa said, “The businesses being honored this month set the standard for prioritizing a diverse workforce. When given the opportunity, individuals with disabilities make great employees, and we celebrate these 91ƽ businesses that have adopted equitable and inclusive hiring practices. The Board of Regents and State Education Department are grateful for the important work of our ACCES-VR team and our partners who support individuals with disabilities in finding employment opportunities.”
Deputy Commissioner Ceylane Meyers-Ruff said, “The State ACCES-VR office is pleased to support NDEAM and the businesses being honored this year. A diverse workforce can strengthen business and drive innovation. We are proud to partner with employers who share our commitment to bringing diversity, equity, and inclusion to all New York workplaces.”

About ACCES-VR
Through the Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) program, the Department assists individuals with disabilities in securing and maintaining employment so they can live independently. ACCES-VR offers individuals with disabilities a wide range of supports—from counseling, guidance, assessment, job placement, and job coaching to tuition assistance, occupational tools, and equipment to start a business, for those who are self-employed—to help them make a career and earn a living. These individuals work with Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors who connect them with the right programs and people, so that they can reach their employment goals. In 2021, more than 68,000 individuals received ACCES-VR services. There are 15 ACCES-VR offices and 10 satellites statewide.
ACCES-VR works closely with the 91ƽ Department of Labor (DOL) and the 91ƽ Commission for the Blind to help individuals with disabilities find jobs and to identify employers that hire these individuals. The Commission for the Blind provides vocational rehabilitation for people who are blind and nominates businesses to be recognized this month. Additionally, DOL vets all businesses nominated as part of NDEAM.
