State Assessment
The Department began the implementation of new Regents Examinations in mathematics with the Regents Examination in Algebra I (Common Core) in June 2014. This was followed by the implementation of the Regents Examination in Geometry (Common Core) in June 2015 and the Regents Examination in Algebra II (Common Core) in June 2016. Over several years, as each of these exams was introduced, the corresponding Regents Examination measuring the 2005 Standard was, or will be, phased out following a short overlap period for each examination. For more information, see .
The Board of Regents amended Commissioner’s Regulations at their December 2015 meeting to provide the option for students enrolled in Algebra II (Common Core) courses, at the discretion of the school, to take the Regents Examination in Algebra 2/Trigonometry (2005 Standard) in addition to the Regents Examination in Algebra II (Common Core) for the June 2016, August 2016, and January 2017 administrations. This policy and related considerations are described at
.
For the upcoming school year, all students who are taking Algebra II coursework and who will be taking an associated Regents Examination in June 2017 or thereafter should be provided with instruction in the Algebra II (Common Core) standards. This will prepare students for the Regents Examination in Algebra II (Common Core), which will be the only exam available at this level of mathematics in June 2017 and thereafter. The final administration of the Regents Examination in Algebra 2/Trigonometry (2005 Standard) will be in January 2017.
